Introduction

I’ve been asked quite a few times how I painted my Fighting Uruk-hai, so I thought it would be a good idea to finally come up with a Painting Guide. Uruks are quick and fun to paint and look great in large groups, even when they are poorly painted. This guide will show you how to make every single one of them look great by simply spending some extra time on them. The biggest problems concerning Uruk-hai seem to be the skin and the armour. Hopefully the following guide will solve these problems for you. So let’s start painting an army worthy of Mordor!

Step 1- Prime with Chaos Black

Undercoat the model with Chaos Black.

Step 2- Painting the Armour

Start by heavily drybrushing the entire armour, the chainmail, and the sword with Tin Bitz. Now lightly drybrush with Beaten Cooper followed by an even lighter drybrush with a 50:50 Mix of Boltgun Metal and Chainmail. Carefully highlight the edges of each part of the armour with the same mix.

Step 3

Wash the armour and the chainmail (don’t do the sword) with a 50:50 Mix of Flesh Wash and Chestnut Ink. Now water down some Chaos Black and carefully outline the edges of each part of the armour. This will add some more depth to it. If the armour turns out to bright and shiny, you can a) wash it with Chestnut Ink and/or b) lightly drybrush with Tin Bitz again.

Step 4

Now paint the shield the same way as the armour (don’t glue it on yet though).
Repaint all the parts of the miniature which have been accidentally drybrushed (face, skin etc.) with Chaos Black.

Step 5- Painting the Skin

Base the skin with a 60:40 Mix of Scab Red (60%) and Chaos Black (40%).

Step 6

Now add some Dark Flesh to the mix for the first highlights. The next layer was done with a 50:50 Mix of Dark Flesh and Scab Red. Finally highlight the raised parts (chin, knees etc.) with pure Dark Flesh and wash the entire skin with a thinned mix of Chaos Black and Scab Red.

Step 7- Painting the Leather

Base the cloth and the leather straps with a 60:40 Mix of Chaos Black and Scorched Brown. Then highlight with pure Scorched Brown and finally with a 50:50 Mix of Scorched Brown and Bestial Brown.

Step 8- Painting the Rest

Drybrush the gloves, the boots and the hair with Codex Grey, then wash with thinned Chaos Black.
Lightly drybrush the teeth with Skull White and wash them with thinned Flesh Wash.

Step 9- Painting the Base

After gluing on the shield, paint the entire base Dark Flesh, then brush thinned PVA adhesive onto it and dip the base into GW sand. When dry, wash the sand with pure Brown Ink.

Painting Uruk Hai

Drybrush with Snakebite Leather, a 50:50 Mix of Snakebite Leather and Fortress Grey and finally pure Fortress Grey.
Now repaint the edge of the base with Dark Flesh again and add some different kinds of static grass to it.
That’s it! The Uruk is now ready to march and die for Isengard. The White Hand will be pleased!
