Painting Warriors of Minas Tirith
Painting Guide
-- Sven Adrian (Keyser Soze)
GW Paints used: Step 1 - (Spray)Prime with Chaos Black. Step 2 – Painting the armour Drybrush the entire armour and helmet with Boltgun Metal followed by a lighter drybrush with Chainmail
and finally a very light one with Mithril Silver. Step 3 Now wash the armour with thinned Black Ink. When dry, repaint each plate of the armour with thinned
Boltgun Metal. Then highlight the edges of the plates with Chainmail. After that, carefully outline
each plate and part of the armour and helmet with Chaos Black. This will give the armour a much “deeper”
and “cleaner” look. Finally wash the entire armour with an 80:20 mix of Step 4 – Painting the face After repainting all parts of the mini around the armour with Chaos Black, paint the eye balls with
a fine detail brush. My favourite brush for details like this is the Pure Sable Fine Detail brush (00) by Foundry. Step 5 Now carefully paint the pupils with two very thin black lines right in the middle of the eyes. Step 6 Paint the entire face with Dark Flesh. Step 7 Highlight the face with Dwarf Flesh and finally with some Elf Flesh. Step 8 – Painting the tunic, gloves and belt Paint the tunic, gloves and the belt with an 80:20 Mix of Step 9 – Painting the boots, the bow and the hair Base with Scorched Brown and then highlight with Bestial Brown. I usually use some Vallejo Drying
Retarder when highlighting bows, spear shafts etc. to achieve a smooth blending, but you don’t really
need to do that. Give the hair a final highlight with Snakebite Leather and wash it with thinned Brown Ink.
Base the remaining small metal bits (like on the sword) with Mithril Silver, followed by Shining Gold
and highlight the edges with Mithril Silver. Step 10 Paint the arrows with a 50:50 Mix of Scorched Brown and Fortress Grey. Lightly drybrush with
Bleached Bone and then carefully highlight with pure Skull White. Finally wash with thinned Brown Ink. Step 11 – Basing Paint the entire base Dark Flesh, then brush thinned PVA adhesive onto it and dip the base into GW sand.
You could also add some piece of bark or a stone by just gluing it to the base before applying the PVA. Step 12 After drying, paint the sand with pure Brown Ink, then drybrush with Snakebite Leather, a 50:50 Mix of
Snakebite Leather and Fortress Grey and finally pure Fortress Grey. Now repaint the edge of the base with
Dark Flesh again. That will give the base a much cleaner look. Finally just add some different kinds of static grass. That’s it! Another defender of the White City ready to fight the forces of Mordor! I hope you enjoyed this article. Feedback and questions are appreciated!
