Description

This scenario takes place between the parting from Edoras and the siege of Helm’s Deep, as Gandalf leaves Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn to find the errand riders of Rohan and their commander: Erkenbrand (as in the book, in the movie it is Eomer).

Participants

Good Side:

  • Gandalf the White on Shadowfax
  • Gwaihir

Evil Side:
  • 10 Warg riders (no more then 4 can carry a bow)
  • 20 Fighting Uruk Hai (no more then 5 can carry a bow or crossbow)
  • 1 Uruk Hai Captain with Shield
  • 15 Orcs (no limit on bows)
  • 1 Orc Captain with Shield

Layout

This scenario is played on 2 combined boards, both measuring 80 x 80 cm (or on 1 board measuring 80 x 160 cm). The boards should contain parts of difficult terrain such as hills, rocky outcrops, woods, etc. Anything that stops Gandalf from going in a straight line all of the time.

Starting Positions

Gandalf starts at the edge of board 1, no further then 5 cm from the edge. The Uruk Hai and their captain start at the other end of this board, on either side. The Uruk Hai are moving from one side to the other side the board, going to Helms Deep. The Orcs and the Warg riders are deployed in the middle of the second board and may only be moved to intercept Gandalf once he has entered the second board.

Objectives

The Good side wins if Gandalf gets to the other side.
The Evil side wins if they kill Gandalf.

Special Rules

Gandalf faces his enemies mostly alone. However, in time of need he may call upon Gwaihir to come in aid. Gwaihir can then come into play at any place on the board at no less then 40 cm of Gandalf, and he can not attack any enemies in his first turn. When Gwaihir comes into play, the good player rolls a die from the second turn that Gwaihir is on the board. If he rolls a 5+, Gwaihir can only be used one more turn and is then removed from play. The good side can call Gwaihir only once in the game.

The Uruk Hai and their captain are going in a straight line and cannot see Gandalf until he is 12 cm from they’re position. Only then can they try to intercept Gandalf.
For every five enemies that are killed by Gandalf, Gandalf heals one wound.
